Insieme al lago di Ripa Sottile, al lago di Ventina e a quello di Piediluco (che pero’ si trova in Umbria ) costituisce i resti di quello che era anticamente il lago Velino che occupava la Conca di Rieti. La piana fu occupata fino al 271 a.C. da questa vasta distesa di acqua circondata da paludi,finche’ il console romano Manio Curio Dentato la bonifico’. Data la sua posizione nella piana sottostante l’omonimo comune e’ conosciuto anche come Lago di Cantalice e fino al secolo scorso il suo diametro maggiore segnava il confine tra gli Stati Pontifici e il Regno di Napoli. Il lago ha una superficie di poco inferiore ad 1 Kmq ,con una lunghezza di 1 Km e una circonferenza di circa 3 Km ed e’ alimentato da fossi che scendono dai monti Reatini . Ha una profondita’ massima di 7,25 metri,mentre le altre sue propaggini sono assai piu’ basse. E’ unito al lago di Ripa Sottile dal canale della Vergara,che ha la funzione di far defluire le acque in quest’ultimo,dove grazie a delle idrovore,il livello e’ mantenuto al di sotto di quello naturale.
Cosa vedere
Essendo il lago praticamente inaccessibile converra’ dedicarsi per non ripetere quanto detto per quello di Ripa Sottile alla cittadina di Poggio Bustone ed al suo Convento di San Giacomo da cui e’ possibile godere di suggestivi scorci soprattutto al tramonto,quando il sole risaltando coi suoi bagliori rossastri nelle acque le fa sembrare di argento.
Come arrivarci
Da Roma seguire la SS4 Salaria in direzione Rieti per poi proseguire per la SS79 in direzione Terni per una decina di Km , il lago si trova sulla destra verso Poggio Bustone.
The lake

What to see
Being the lake practically inaccessible agree 'devote to not repeat what has been said for what Ripa Sottile to the town of Poggio Bustone and its Convent of St. James from which' can enjoy picturesque views especially at sunset, when the sun standing out with its flashes reddish waters makes them look silver.

From Rome follow the SS4 Salaria towards Rieti, then continue on the SS79 towards Terni for about ten km, the lake is on the right towards Poggio Bustone.
