E’ il piu’ noto e caratteristico dei pochi laghetti appenninici d’alta quota, ed e’ anche quello che detiene il primato di altezza di tutto il Lazio. Si trova infatti ad un’altezza di 1788 mt. s.l.m. sull’omonima catena montuosa. I monti della Duchessa con vette che raggiungono i 2000 metri , circondano il piccolo lago e segnano anche il confine tra il Lazio e l’Abruzzo che passa immediatamente alle loro spalle nella valle del Teve. Il lago lungo circa 400 metri e largo 150 e’ privo di immissari ed e’ alimentato dallo scioglimento delle nevi e dalle acque meteoriche ,con la conseguenza di subire quindi variazioni di livello. Profondo non piu’ di 3 metri si ritiene avere origine carsica. La sua forma di 8 allungato suggerisce infatti una fusione di due doline contigue. Il lago divenne tristemente famoso nel 1978 ai tempi del rapimento Moro .
Cosa vedere
L’intera zona e’ dal 1990 Riserva Naturale Regionale e soggetta a vincoli di carattere paesistico,idrogeologico e forestale ed in parte e’ un’Oasi di protezione della fauna. Tutto la zona suggerisce escursioni naturalistiche dalla mezza giornata in su.

Da Roma prendere l’Autostrada A-24 Roma-L’Aquila ed uscire a Valle del Salto, seguire le indicazioni per il paesino semiabbandonato di Cartore da cui si diparte per il sentiero naturalistico per il lago.
The lake

The whole area and 'Regional Nature Reserve since 1990 and subject to the constraints landscape, geological and forestry and in part and' an oasis of wildlife protection. All of the area suggests excursions from half a day up.

From Rome, take the A-24 motorway Rome-Aquila and exit at Valle del Salto, follow the signs to the semi-abandoned village of Cartore which branches to the nature path to the lake.
